My husband and I were preparing to celebrate our first anniversary and I was graduating from college. My parents surprised us by offering to pay our way to the family vacation at the beach in Outer Banks, North Carolina. My parents, brother, aunt, uncle, and cousin rented a house in Corolla. In order to get there, you need 4-wheel drive. It’s absolutely gorgeous, and an adventure just finding your rental home. The island is home to a wild horse herd and if you’re lucky during your stay you’ll see them nibbling grass or standing in the surf and wind to avoid the biting flies. It’s really something to see!
It’s a beach vacation and a nature vacation all rolled into one, with the wild horses, rabbits, deer, and snakes on the land and dolphins, fish, and crabs in the ocean. This particular trip we didn’t know Uncle Jim had a special treasure hunt planned until we got there and he handed us one of his famous clues. There were references to knights of square tables, misty mirrors, cold pools, and, one in particular, that stumped us for an entire day: Revelation 6:8. Remember, now, that the ‘kids’ solving this problem were grown-ups: myself, my husband, my cousin, Chelsea, and my brother Caleb. Uncle Jim loved to stump us. I can still see his grin and hear his laugh when we would put our ideas up as questions. He’d tell us, “You’re thinking about this wrong, guys.” And there would be a definitive sparkle in his blue eyes, bright as the sun gleaming off the ocean out the window.
We eventually called Chelsea’s brother, Brett, Jim’s youngest child. Brett had been unable to come on vacation with us this time as his medical duties called, but he was happy to be our “phone a friend.” After hours spent on this one clue, walking on the beach deep in discussion and straining our brains to think of it, Chelsea finally solved the puzzle. The clues led us to use a metal detector and locate the golden treasure: buried gold coins on the beach near the perimeter of the house we had rented.
It is one of the best memories I have of our family time together. I still miss Uncle Jim every day. Callum’s Compass is part tribute to his memory, his love of treasure hunts, and his sparkle and smile. You’ll see that Revelation 6:8 plays a big factor in the book too.
